The Return: Reconnecting, Rebuilding and Reclaiming Community
In 2022, the Capital City Lawyers Association proudly hosted the return of the Black Lawyers Ball—our first in-person gala since the COVID-19 pandemic. After years of uncertainty, virtual connection, and physical distance, this event represented something deeper than a celebration. It marked a long-awaited moment of reconnection for the Black legal community in Wake County and across North Carolina.
There was no formal theme for the 2022 Ball. The theme was simple and powerful: our return.
Attorneys, judges, law students, and community leaders gathered once again in person to celebrate excellence, fellowship, and the mission that has guided CCLA for decades. The evening was filled with renewed energy, meaningful conversations, and a shared sense of purpose as we reestablished traditions that had been paused—but never forgotten.
A Historic Moment for CCLA
The 2022 Black Lawyers Ball symbolized more than the continuation of an annual event—it reflected the resilience of our organization and our community.
During the pandemic, CCLA remained committed to its mission of supporting Black legal professionals and serving Wake County through education, mentorship, scholarship, and public service. The return of the Ball represented a new chapter—one focused on rebuilding connections, strengthening our network, and expanding our impact.
Many attendees described the evening as both emotional and inspiring, as colleagues and friends reunited in person for the first time in years.
Supporting the Next Generation
As always, the Black Lawyers Ball served as a fundraiser for the Capital City Lawyers Association Scholarship Fund. Proceeds from the event help support law students and future legal leaders, ensuring that the pipeline of diverse talent in the legal profession continues to grow.
The return of the Ball reaffirmed CCLA’s commitment to:
- Supporting law students through scholarships
- Providing mentorship and professional development
- Strengthening the Black legal community in Wake County
- Expanding access to justice and opportunity
A Foundation for the Future
The success of the 2022 Ball laid the groundwork for the tremendous growth that followed. In the years since, attendance has increased significantly, sponsorship has expanded, and the Black Lawyers Ball has become one of the premier legal and professional events in the region.
The 2022 Ball reminded us of something essential: when our community comes together, we are stronger, more connected, and better positioned to serve the next generation.
This night was not just a return—it was a renewal.
