What Every New/Young Lawyer Needs to Know About Building Resilience Using Mindfulness and Neuroscience
Live Cary | NC Bar Center
Friday, September 7, 2018
Neuroscience research discovered that our brains have two operating modes: reactive and responsive. When we are in reactive mode, we think less clearly, are less articulate, and have difficulty concentrating and retaining information. When we are in responsive mode, our brains are fully “on line,” making it easier to think, problem solve, be productive, and relate to others. Mindfulness helps us notice in which operating mode we are functioning and cues us to return to responsive mode if we notice we are in reactive mode. Mindfulness meditation offers a host of techniques to support our brains to operate from responsive mode even when experiencing stressors.
In this program, learn the neuroscience of stress, how mindfulness reduces professional stress and increases success, the difference between practicing law in reactive mode versus responsive mode, mindfulness tools to practice law in responsive mode, neuroscience techniques to overcome your “negativity bias,” mindfulness and neuroscience techniques that prevent burnout and build resilience, how to communicate more effectively with clients and team members, and simple ways to improve work-life balance.
