January 25, 2022

My name is Nana Asante-Smith and I serve as the president of the North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers (NCABL).  I am writing to share the announcement below about NCABL’s upcoming virtual CLE on Qualified Immunity, scheduled for February 24th at noon

NCABL Qualified Immunity CLE Announcement

1 Hour CLE – Introduction to Qualified Immunity – General Overview

Qualified immunity shields police and other law enforcement officials from civil suits for money damages for violations of civil rights unless certain conditions are met. But with multiple high-profile police shootings in the past few years and increased calls for greater law enforcement accountability, do you understand the concept of qualified immunity in this context?

This one-hour CLE will outline the history, the concept of qualified immunity and how far the federal courts have deviated from the original legislation that commenced 42 U. S. C. §1983.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Introduce the qualified immunity doctrine
  2. Gain an overview of qualified immunity over time
  3. Review recent case law on qualified immunity
  4. Provide a framework for assessing and addressing qualified immunity issues arising in §1983 cases

Presenter:

Gwendolyn S. Hailey is an attorney with over 30 years of experience in criminal and civil law.  Attorney Hailey has a deep commitment to justice issues and an intense desire to educate on issues affecting justice in the United States.
