In the December 1987/January 1988 and February/March 1988 editions of BarNotes, a former publication of the North Carolina State Bar, Kenneth Lewis wrote about the history of Black lawyers in North Carolina, and this article in its entirety is reprinted in this edition of the Journal. The article provides an important overview of the history of Black lawyers in North Carolina through 1987. More progress has been made by Black lawyers in North Carolina since this article was published 36 years ago. Nevertheless, it provides insight into the roots of that progress and an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by Black lawyers in North Carolina from the Civil War to the present.
